‘god’s War’, Christopher Tyerman. Book Review
Yes those nasty Crusades. In the post-modern, Marx-droid universe of salivating moppets and eager to please relativists ['please daddy tell us again about how nice the Saracens were and evil the Christians?']; it is quite easy to lose sight of reality. Muslims and Arabs good, Christians bad. Arab, Muslim and Turkish imperialism good, European fascist. So it is refreshing to read a dense, intellectual and accurate piece of work which describes the Crusades as they were – a complex political, military, and very human response to pre-modern Arab and Turkish designs at world conquest. They might have in effect saved Europe.
Tyerman’s overall conclusion is that, ‘..the internal, personal decision to follow the cross, to inflict harm on others at great personal risk, at the cost of enormous privations, at the service of a consuming cause, cannot be explained excused or dismissed either as a virtue or sin. Rather, its very contradictions spelt its humanity.’ How true. The Crusades, erupting from Pope Urban II’s call in 1095 to help the Eastern church against Turkish or Saracen depredation was full of cross purpose, material aims, personal vanity, spiritual earnestness, military valor, and political intrigue. That is what makes them such a great story.
The Crusades were in many ways, extraordinarily successful. Men, money, material, and complex logistics were stretched over a thousand miles from the European heartland to the Holy Land and the Eastern mediterranean. The crusaders were usually quite outnumbered. Each of the 5 major Crusades, lasting roughly from 1095 to 1299 could only muster some 30.000 – 40.000 men, many of whom would melt away after a few months of soldiering, confident that any work combatting the Turks would gain them access into heaven.
The Muslims, aided by their intimate knowledge of geography, millions of citizens from which to draw armies, proximate logistics, and supply, should easily have repulsed these infidels from any and all conquests. The fact that the crusaders were able to organise; embark; conquer; hold and build the incredible line of castle fortifications some of which, like the Krak de Chevaliers are still standing today, is one of the great achievements of pre-modern warfare.
Tyerman’s book is valuable because it relates history as it most likely was. The Crusades were viewed in Western Europe as bellum justum – a just war – a war to reclaim once Christian lands from infidel Turks; a war to push the Muslims out of Europe; a war to help save the Eastern church and bring it under the control of the Western. The casus belli for the conflict was varied and justified by theologians and lay political leaders alike. Jerusalem, the home of Christ and the origins of the Church had a profound and special attraction for an extremely religious and devout population.
Tyerman rightly asserts that Muslim supremacism and war mongering made the Crusades a necessity. Large parts of Europe were under Muslim dominaton and, ‘jihad was fundamental to the Faith, described by some as a sixth pillar of Islam. In theory fighting was incumbent on all Muslims until the whole world had been subdued, but it was a spiritual as well as military exercise from the start, and a corporate not individual obligation.’
You won’t read such an honest assessment of jihadic Mohammedism in the New York Times. Without a response Western Europe might very well have suffered the fate of the Eastern Church. As Tyerman states, ‘it is hard to argue that we are dealing with an age any more credulous or unthinkingly accepting of religious truth than our own.’ Certainly so. Contrary to modern media and educational manipulation, the Europeans of the 11th century and of the Crusades were not simpleton mental midgets, scurrying around mud hovels, wearing hair shirts practicing witch craft or listening to papal sermons with rotted teeth falling out. Western Europe in the early medieval period was a bustling, thriving, urbanising scene of activity, invention, and dynamism – everything one would expect to find and see, in an era of change, which heralded the creation of the modern political-economy.
Tyerman’s chapters are broken into outlining the 5 major crusades – all of them described in rather exhaustive fashion. Details on the military, political and church-oriented spiritual complexity are compelling and very human. The highly successful First Crusade, featuring many of France’s and Germany’s leading noblemen, families and Knights, is summarised by Tyerman as a dramatic episode, an event rarely told.
The First Crusade’s conquests from the borders of the shrinking Greek state [some 100 odd miles outside of modern day Constantinople or Istanbul], through the rough terrain of Anatolia, down the Lebanese coast, and on through to the borders of modern Gaza and east to Jerusalem, north east to Edessa, were an astonishing feat, accomplished in just 2 short years of fighting. A force of roughly 40.000 men, from different states, under various leaders with political infighting and intrigue, and weakly supported by the Greeks of the Eastern empire, had landed, marched, fought and won numerous victories over far larger Turkish hosts.
From 1097 to 1099 when Jerusalem was taken, the Christian forces were always in demand and need of men, food, water, supplies, military weaponry, and the medieval tank or mounted Knight. Fully armed mounted knights were extremely expensive to maintain and only the rich could afford to pay their own way to the Holy Land, including horse, armor, servants and food. Of a force of 30.000 the crusaders might be lucky to count on 2.000 such men, their power often assuring a Christian victory over the lighter armed Turkish forces.
As Tyerman notes about the complexity and astonishing prowess of the First Crusade, ‘Yet the political, material, and military pillars of victory fail adequately to describe the structure of the First Crusade or alone explain its success. Although it is misleading to assume that all recruits and followers shared a similar intensity of religious motivation and zeal, without the element of ideology and spiritual exhiliration, there would have been no march to Jerusalem, let alone a successful conquest.’
Military superiority, good organisation, personal genius, luck, good planning and a rough hewn solidarity were the reasons why the First Crusade succeeded. These crusaders had faith, believed in their cause and went through amazing deprivations before finally, in 1099 attacking, sacking and controlling their objective – Jerusalem.
In spite of this success the Crusades were doomed to failure if and once the Muslims could unify their command and take advantage of Christian manpower weakness, internal political dissension and lack of Western European support. Importantly for the Muslims, the varied Christian states and sundry crusaders always had a hard time creating political and miltiary unity. Without a unified chain of military and political command, Christian conquests became difficult to defend.
Another issue was resource scarcity. During the 200 years of the Crusading wars only a small fraction of European power was involved in trying to wrest and protect the Holy Land from Muslim occupation. If the average Crusade had about 40.000 fighting men involved it represented a small fraction of European manpower and also value-added GDP. Logistically such a force would entail a further 400.000 people to support the Crusade including those involved in shipping, transport, supply manufacture, arms provisioning, food supply, various support work and aiding the army directly in engineering, food and siege work. At most about 500.000-700.000 people would have been occupied in some way with the Crusades. Europe’s population at that time was about 30 million in 1100 doubling by 1300 to more than 60 million. This signals that Europe was a fast changing, very productive and extremely wealthy society. So in effect we can say that less than 2 % of Europeans were involved with the Crusades – a rather paltry amount.
The problem for the Christian East was getting money out of their fast growing home economies, and using such wealth to secure and deepen their hold on the Holy Land. Medieval Europe was still in the nascent phases of nation state creation. Its richest territory was Germany which was made up of many different and competing sub kingdoms. The German Emperor whilst powerful, did not have anything approaching the machinery of a modern state, nor the ability to extract monies to the level the later states would deem justifiable. France was not yet unified [and wouldn't be until after the Albigensian or Cathar crusades in southern France in the early 13th century]; Spain was bifurcated by Muslim conquest; Italy was split into many kingdoms; and the other parts of Europe were fragmented, small and preoccupied with internal matters. In short in about 1100, the European modern state and its ability to create wealth, tax it, and use it to fund centralised armies was not yet in existence.
Therein lies the major factor for the eventual collapse of the Crusading ideal. Without a strong nation state structure where GDP can be centrally taxed and armies centrally managed, the Crusades were left with wealthy Kings and Lords paying the costs, supported by European wide Church taxation or tithes so make up the short fall. Even this was not enough. Many crusaders paid their own way, supporting themselves as they went with plunder. In fact many states such as France went into financial ruin due to the Crusades with some states and their noblemen spending an entire year or more of revenue just to reach the Holy Land.
The Crusades were a very costly business indeed. Along the routes between Europe and the Holy Land, pillage and theft was common, and much of it directed against fellow Christians and where possible, the Jews. Attacks against Jews by crusaders along the path of their march, were legion. Tyerman relates that, ‘Nothing in official Christian doctrine justified slaying Jews. Pope Alexander II had explicitly prohibited it when drawing a careful distinction between them and Muslims in 1063.’ Without plunder or the promise of it, the Crusades never would have happened. This says nothing about the sack of Constantinople itself in 1204 and the looting of its wealth.
Along with plunder comes carnage and the Crusades if savage, were no more savage than any other pre-modern war. The myth that the Muslims were tolerant multi-cultists devoted to easing the pain of conquered Jews and Christians and never engaging in mass slaughter and savagery is junk and bunk. As Tyerman elucidates, ‘The recent Turkish conquests in the Near East had been accompanied by carnage and enslavement on a grand scale…….Massacres as well as atrocity stories were – and are – an inescapable part of war. In the face of a Muslim counter-attack, letting the locals live may not have seemed a prudent option to the Christian victors, however obscene the alternative.’
How real that statement is. The Turks, and the Arabs before them, warred, raped, murdered and annihilated their way through Christian and Jewish territory. Submissive and cowed populations make convenient and easy to rule apartheid empires. So it was with the Muslim states of the Holy Land.
Tyerman’s book is a great one volume piece on why the Crusades happened, how they occured and just how complicated a story it all is. But a couple of things stand out when reading it. The faith and confidence of 11-14th century Europe is one. Their logistical and sometimes military brilliance in campaigning far from home is a second. The engineering achievements in fortifying and bringing to economic life an uncompromisingly harsh land is a third.
And perhaps most importantly of all, is their clear headed appreciation of what Islam was all about – a cult of Mohammed, which desired to wipe out civilisation. It is a lesson that one thousand years later still resonates.

Writing a Manuscript – Editing Styles
Whenever you correct or make changes in a book manuscript, what you’re doing is editing that manuscript. I’ve been in the business of helping people write their books for over the past twenty-five years, and I’ve helped many a first-time author put a manuscript together in a way that made it more readable, enjoyable, saleable and finally — marketable. You can do this too, with proper training, some experience and a solid working knowledge of written language and its capabilities.
There are three basic methods of helping an author write or edit a manuscript: ghost writing, rewriting, and copy editing. There is also a lesser style of editing called proof reading. The first method I will discuss is ghost writing. That is when you work from the materials the author gives you, but you actually write the book yourself. You might be using audio and/or video tapes and written materials, making phone calls, taking notes as you go, or holding meetings and interviews. You also may be doing some research on related topics or to add more material to the book. Once you have what you need, you actually do the job of writing everything by yourself, but with some help from the person hiring you for the job. This person will usually be listed as the actual author of the book.
You may supply new material, new characters, fresh nuances, etc. for the book. But ghost writing can also be on the fine edge of rewriting. For example, the ideas laid out by the original author may fully enter your writing of the book, sometimes as originally constructed by the author. You may rewrite major portions of what the original author wrote, or largely rearrange the writing to suit needed purposes. Or you may simply rewrite a manuscript that was pretty much formally written by the author. This is near the finer edges of copy editing, where what you actually do is simply correct the major and minor mistakes made by the original author.
The differences between ghost writing and copy editing are not always heavily pronounced. They can be quite subtle. But usually ghost writing involves writing by yourself, and copy editing involves making minor to major structural, syntax and grammatical changes in someone else’s writing. And rewriting usually involves heavily rearranging or entirely writing over again what someone else originally wrote. Some people consider it to be ghost writing when you simply take an author’s ideas and rearrange them into readable material, while other people consider that to be rewriting. A major job of rewriting might involved adding a new “voice†to the material, or making changes in the general writing style, which may be superfluous, exaggerative, or simply downright dull.
Copy editing or editing, on the other hand, usually involves keeping to the style of the original writing, without adding much if any of your own writing “voice†to it. What you’re doing is perhaps comparable to repairing the material to reflect greater consistency in the writing, while trying to keep within the boundaries of what the original author wants. You might be making several changes in grammar, suggesting syntax changes which entail remaking word order, and perhaps you will be adding new words and phrases, correcting punctuation, and changing some of the sentence structuring. You may be writing some of your own fresh material again here, as when you do ghost writing. But when copy editing and not ghost writing is involved, there will not usually be major additions of new book material.
On the other hand, you can certainly mesh both copy editing and ghost writing, which is largely a lot of what rewriting entails. You might research additional material and intersperse it where it’s needed in places throughout the manuscript, or you might rewrite the opening “hook†so that it “grabs†the readers’ attention in a more arresting manner. You could also possibly create a brand new ending for the book, and spice up the closings for its various chapters, to make the book more dramatic, give it more “flair,†and add more “spice†and substance to it. All this can be done while still keeping to the original author’s “voice†and maintaining an editing or copy editing style when it comes to the remainder of the manuscript.
Sometimes you will find that a book contains only grammatical errors and doesn’t need much actual editing, except for grammar and syntax or minor structural errors. Sometimes it might also require some fact checking for consistency. Fact checking involves making sure that a character’s name is always spelled the same way, that a town remains to the north and doesn’t suddenly slip down south, and keeping to other such factual consistencies. This style of editing is called proof reading the manuscript, and is also always the last thing you do before you turn in your final copy of it to the client, whether you ghost write, rewrite, copy edit or simply end up proof reading it. You must also try to proof read the manuscript while you are working on it, but you can save some errors for the final proofing of the copy.
Charges for the above services, as you’ve probably guessed, vary widely. You would of course charge more for greater work involved, especially if you’re doing most of the writing. Most ghost writers also charge more for research, sometimes by the hour. It all depends on how much time and effort you feel you need to put into the writing. You need to get a good grasp of exactly how much work is probably going to be involved, and how much time it is going to take you. If you are writing the book from scratch, using the author’s ideas and doing a lot of “side research†where you are looking up ideas for new material, this would be considered upper level ghost writing, or “ghosting.†You should then charge commensurate to the greater amount of work involved.
However, if all you’re doing is proof reading or “proofing†the manuscript, naturally you would charge far less money to properly perform such a service for the would-be book author. And what you would charge for copy editing or rewriting would once again depend largely on the amount of time and work involved. But you also need to consider the budgetary needs of the client. Some clients have more money to spend, some less. You need to discuss this in advance of performing the work, sounding the client out on his or her budgetary requirements. Also, you must consider the nature of the book you are working on. Is it a major money-maker, or likely to never sell very widely? Would you like to charge by the hour, by the completed page, or would you like to ask for a percentage of the book’s gross or net sales? You must determine these matters before you decide on your fees, and both you and the book author must agree to all such terms. You may even need to sign a formal contract.
Whenever you receive a manuscript from an author, or a request to “look at†his or her material and judge what needs to be done with it, review the materials the author is willing to release very carefully. Explain to the author that all original material is fully copyrighted under the US copyrights law of 1989, and that all nations with copyrights treaties with the US cover this as well. This is a simpler matter than it may appear to be, and there are usually only a few applicable laws. You should also explain that the partial or completed manuscript can be registered with the US Copyrights Office. Many potential authors are quite relieved when they find out they will always own full copyrights to their own original material, no matter who looks at it, unless they sign any of them away. And unless they sign any such rights over to you, you are releasing all rights you have to the material you write for the book, even your new or original material, to the actual author. This is because you are being paid for the single job of writing the book for someone else.
But how do you begin to work? Once you have a good idea of approximately what’s needed to turn the material you will have at your disposal into a full-fledged marketable book manuscript, ask the author for a five- to ten-page sample of his or her work. Often, the beginning chapter of the book will do. If you are strictly ghost writing, ask the author to give you some ideas and create about ten pages of readable material from them. You will then use this “free sample†to show the author your skills and what you can do to craft a terrific book. Also, don’t forget to sound out the author on his or her total budget and figure out a decent rate for the work you will be performing. You might call it “light to medium copy editing†or “research and ghost writing†or “simple proof reading.†Then set a schedule of payments and time to complete the manuscript with your client. Whatever you decide, behave professionally by your own standards, and get the client to agree to a definite plan. This is the best possible course of action for you to take in regard to working on a book manuscript. Remember, this is a job, and you are doing your best to both produce a great book for the client and to be paid what your skills are worth.
Finally, you will begin to work on what will be either your client’s own masterpiece, or if an agreement is struck, a book co-authored by the two of you. This can work quite well, and gives you a lot more credit for your writing. You can get your name on the book spine and jacket, and possibly make more money from the book as an equal partner of the client. Or if you want to remain “ghostly,†you may request the client to consider you the “editor†of the book, asking only for credit somewhere within its pages. This is often done by listing you on the acknowledgements page. It might state, “This book would never have been accomplished without the help of my editor, So and So.†That way you have hard evidence that you actually worked on the book. But if you feel you did more than mere editing, you may request that the client put “Ghostwritten by So and So†somewhere, so the world will know about the hard work you performed. In the bad old days, usually all the byline a ghost writer could hope to receive was “editor,†but nowadays it may be permissible to use the terms “ghost writer.†It is largely up to the discretion of your client, who may still want to be viewed as the actual author of the book. In that case, remember that you are being paid to be a ghost, and you are relinquishing all rights to the writing and material in the manuscript because you are being paid to work for the client.
You will also need to make certain assessments when it comes to creating a truly fine, hopefully best-selling and clearly wonderful fiction or non-fiction book, and when figuring out what exactly you are going to charge to do the job. Is this the kind of book that will likely become a best seller, or not? Could you stand to make serious money if instead of payment in advance, you accept a percentage of the book’s eventual sales over time? Whether payment is made for the actual construction of the manuscript or you are willing to work “on spec,†or you agree with the client to use a combination of both, you will have to make these arrangements in advance of performing the job. As I said before, you may even need to sign a multi-party book contract, one which may involve a potential book publisher or literary agent. Please remember that the amount of work involved is the greatest determinant when it comes to figuring out what you are going to do and how much time it is going to take, as well as how much you should charge. But it can be very important to consider book sales as well, and you should discuss this with the client.
Nowadays the writing fields of copy editing, rewriting and ghost writing are burgeoning and growing faster than ever, especially with the increasing amount of self-publishing services and the ready availability of writer’s resources on the Internet. Therefore it is imperative that as a freelance writer you know which styles of “editing†you will be using to create a new book’s content, and how you are going to arrange your particularized work schedule and payments. You must also work in a timely manner and behave professionally at all times. By carefully polishing a book manuscript written for someone else to a gleaming perfection of its beauty and attainment, you will enable the entertainment and information gained from it to become as powerful, readable, saleable and marketable as both you and the client want it to be.

Change Your Look With Cosmetic Colored Contacts
People often want to reinvent themselves and change the way they look and ultimately how others see them. Some will take drastic steps to achieve this but most will change only a few things about themselves and leave it at that. Today, people even have the option of changing the color of their eyes with cosmetic colored contacts. Unlike prescription contact lenses, cosmetic colored contacts can be worn by nearly everybody and are available in a wide variety of colors and styles. So whether you want to create that special look for that special occasion or just feel that you would look better with blue eyes, these contact lenses could be the thing for you.
Unless you have worked in either the movie or theater industry, chances are that you would not have been accustomed to cosmetic colored contacts in previous years. These lenses were primarily used as special effects tools in most movies involving creatures of the dark like zombies, vampires etc… Today, these same contact lenses are available to the public and are used for anything from a Halloween party to someone just wanting to change the color of their eyes.
Cosmetic Colored Contacts For Every Occasion
Due to their popularity, special effects contacts are mass produced or if you really need to, they can even be custom made. Just expect to pay quite a lot more for the custom made ones. They come in a wide variety and more often that not are directly associated to a particular character from a movie. Movies like The Lost Boys have helped make these lenses what they are today.
There are also the generic types of cosmetic colored contacts that look like cats’ or snakes’ eyes. Wearing these contacts, will completely allow you to look as if you really have eyes like cats or snakes without affecting your normal vision. There are also wolf eye versions available.
For a bolder statement, you could even get special effects contacts that will give you the zombie or blind eye look. These lenses will give the impression that your eyes have been covered with a solid white milky substance and are really life like. The only draw back with these types of lenses is that you cannot actually see through them and therefore most people would rather only wear one lens in order to still be able to move around.
If you want your eyes to look like that have been engulfed by fire, then fire eye contacts are the way to go. Black sclera contacts will give the impression that your eyes are filled with black motionless oil. You can even have your eyes looking like mirrors or use hemorrhaged eye contacts for blood filled, veins popping eyes.
Cosmetic colored contacts can also be used to enlarge your pupils quite considerably or even make your eyes glow in the dark. These are perfect for going clubbing.
Whether to you like your eyes to be blue or brown or really stand out from the crowd at the next Halloween party, you can be certain that there are cosmetic colored lenses that will fit any occasion or purpose. One last to remember before you go rushing to the mall, is that although you may have perfect vision, you will still need a prescription from a qualified eye specialist to be able to purchase cosmetic colored contacts.

A Review of the 100 World Poker Tour Poker Chip Set
Just over a year ago my wife and I purchased a 100 World Poker Tour Poker Chip Set. It was a house warming gift for my sister and brother in-law, who ended up moving two doors down from us. Over the years we have always had poker parties at least once a month, but if you saw or even tried playing with their cards and chips it would make sense why we got them a new set.
The 100 World Poker Tour Poker Chip Set itself is full of high-quality ranging from the WPT logo to elegant oak carrying case. To be honest, when we first purchased it I thought we should just keep it for ourselves. Seriously, when you see it in a couple minutes you’ll realize why.
We looked over several different types of chips, but nothing looked as good as the 100 World Poker Tour Poker Chip Set with such a low cost. You will also be surprised to learn that there are dice present as well, which offer 9-A signs on each side. Everything dawns the WPT logo, and you get more than just poker chips.
There are 2 decks that are for standard playing and 2 decks. However, when they actually opened up our gift we were surprised to see 2 more decks as well. These were official WPT playing cards, which of course we used first when it was game time. Best of all these weren’t those plastic red, white, and blue chips you find at Wal-Mart. Instead the 100 World Poker Tour Poker Chip Set offered authentic poker chips.
Needless to say, Jenni and her husband loved our gift and still do today. While we aren’t professional poker players to say the least, it’s always nice to pretend and every time we get together it’s an enjoyable time. In fact, I would probably go as far as saying it’s as close to a casino atmosphere as we can get, minus the ridiculous crowds and waiting for a table.
What started out as a simple house warming gift has turned into the perfect one for family friends. Seriously, there is always a birthday or holiday right around the corner and you know what we’re doing? Buying just about everyone a 100 World Poker Tour Poker Chip Set. Keep in mind the people we are getting them for come to our little get togethers.

If you want hardy winter outdoor dog then the Alaskan Malamute may be the one for you!
This breed, descended from the Arctic Wolf, has roots in Alaska where it has been used by Alaskan Eskimos to pull sleds for over 2000 years. These hard-working dogs have great strength and endurance and have pulled sleds on many expeditions including Admiral Byrd,s expeditions to the North Pole.
Weighing in at around 80 to 95 pounds ( 70 – 85 for females) and growing to 24 to 26 inches ( a few inches shorter for females), the Alaskan Malamute is on the large side and part of the AKC Working group. Alaskan Malamutes have an average litter size of six puppies. With good care they can live to be 15 years old.
The sweet expression on these dogs make them just about the cutest puppies ever and they grow into beautiful sweet adults as well. Their disposition is just as sweet as it looks and they make loving pets, but a bit strong willed. they have a thick coat on a solid well-built body. Ears are held erect on a wide head and eyes are dark and almond shaped. There may be some Alaskan Malamutes with blue eyes, however this is a fault which would disqualify your dog in the show ring. The coat can be from 1 to 3 inches long and comes in Wolf Gray, solid white, black and white, red and a red undercoat with gray outer coat. Many dogs have a dark mask and other dark markings and the legs and muscle are usually white.
These dogs are loyal and affectionate, a great family pet and good with children. They are friendly to strangers but may not get along with small animals as they have a strong prey instinct. They also may not get along good with other dogs and early socialization and firm training are important to raising an obedient pet.
Alaskan Malamutes love the outdoors, especially in winter time. Taking your Malamute on a winter walk or bringing him with you when you are snowshoeing or cross-country skiing is a real treat. They can be happy in a fenced in yard but they do like to be around their “pack” so you need to be sure to spend lots of time with your dog even if you keep him outside. this is an act of dog that needs plenty of exercise and will do best with a large yard. It is not advised to let them run free, as this breed will roam in his territory. They can withstand cold temperatures well but in hot climates you need to make sure that the dog does not overheat. Be aware that they are diggers and if you do not bury your fence quite a bit under the ground you will soon find a large hole and no dog inside the fence.
This is a fairly hardy breed with few health problems. They can have hip dysplasia just like any other breed and may be prone to dwarfism. They are rather clean dogs and virtually odorless. they are heavy shedders and grooming consist of brushing twice a week and an occasional dry shampoo.
