Character Education Programs for Academic Success and Play
Our children will be returning to days of regimented learning when they return to school next week. Unlike previous years, Lela won\’t be learning Mandarain, Spanish, theater or knitting. After school, she\’ll probably walk home, perhaps with friends from her neighborhood, and play and relax. During the last twenty years, our kids have been robbed of at least eight hours of leisurely, spontaneous and unstructured play time every week. Compared to children from sixty years ago, it\’s fairly obvious that our children\’s ability to regulate their own behavior, control their impulses and understand their emotions is much worse. Studies have shown an alarming trend in self-regulation; our five-year-olds behave like 1940\’s three-year-olds, and our seven-year-olds have the same emotional capacity as five-year-olds from that same period. Unstructured recreation, led by children, add to a child\’s emotional health, as well as their social, physical and intellectual skills. Unstructured play can teach children to successfully work in groups, as well as how to negotiate, resolve conflicts, share, speak up, and regulate their own behavior and emotions. Another study has revealed that children who attend traditional, academic preschools do not have an educational advantage in reading or math over children who attended preschools that focused on play – but they did have elevated test anxiety, decreased creativity, and more negative feelings about school than children who attended play-based preschools.
By allowing your children to lead their own play, and not questioning the roles that they assume or the structure of their games, we don\’t have to worry about dominating their play experiences. Unless your children are being unfriendly, don\’t attempt to correct their methods of play. Remove yourself from the immediate situation if you find yourself expressing frustration or disdain for the ways that your children choose to play, and allow your child the free play time. It is important to let them lead, and still spend time doing things that you both enjoy. In my personal experience, rough-housing with my kids really increases our connection. I tend to skip participating in their make-believe play, because it\’s difficult for me to enjoy, and I become bored. History doesn\’t show us many examples of parents playing with their children, and even 75% of the world would find it unnatural for a child and parent to play together on the floor. Once your kids reach the age of four or five, it\’s completely normal for parents to step back from their children\’s play and let them control it for themselves. This is how children learn to get along with their peers, and how to entertain themselves. A kid with an imaginary friend isn\’t troubled or crazy; actually, studies have shown that these kids are more apt to interact, laugh and smile in social situations. By projecting their own personalities and interacting with plush creatures with pretend personalities, kids develop the necessary skills to focus on their relationships with other kids. Pretend play with a group of children can stimulate intellectual and social skills in children, which subsequently helps them in school. 30 minutes is the minimum amount of time that kids should play. It\’s even better to let this play last several hours. Instead of using manufactured toys for props, encourage children to substitute common objects in their play, such as sticks for wands, and boxes for houses or cars. It\’s unfortunate, but there aren\’t many neighborhoods where a child under ten can walk the dog without a parent. We\’re not doing what we should as a society by allowing unmoderated play disappear from out children\’s lives; we value play less because of academics that take over our children\’s lives, but we need to protect and implement play for all of our children.

It is only really in recent years that the idea of ball pools has taken popularity, and until very recently, these were really just to be found in adventure playgrounds and activity centres rather than in the home. The inflatable pools however have an advantage, in as much as they can be enjoyed and played with without the balls themselves, and still enjoyed indoors. They can also become quite large and interesting shapes and dens, from small castles to motor cars and tractors – even desert islands with palm trees and a beach! It is important to have a look at the size when inflated, because often these can be a lot larger than you might otherwise imagine from looking at the picture on the packaging. I bought an inflatable Mini Cooper for my little boy, and it wasn’t a great deal smaller than the real thing – and took up most of the living room! Because of its popularity, it had to remain there for some time, and often watching television in the evening was more easily achieved sitting in the pool ourselves than on the sofa looking through the windscreen.
The other aspect to consider is the collection of balls you’ll need. You can buy ball pools in large sacks, often of fifty or a hundred balls to a pack, and these are fairly cheap. The quality of ball is usually a little softer and lighter than the ones you’ll find in professional ball pools available at theme parks and activity centres, but will do just as well. I actually found a bouncy castle firm that supplied ball pools, and they were in the process of re-branding, which meant that they were buying in colour coordinated balls, and getting rid of the multi coloured ones. I bought a thousand of these multi coloured balls, and filled most of my car!
As a general guide, taking the average sized paddling pool or inflatable ball pool, for a child under one years old, one to two hundred balls is more than enough, with two to five hundred being enough for older children. It’s hard to find a ball pool available that will hold more than five hundred, and I have frequently had two or three ball pools filled for when his friends come round to play. It’s certainly a good way of keeping the children entertained, and helping to ensure a good night’s sleep!

Parents tend to minimize the value of pretend play time. However, play time has a significant impact on child development.
Pretend play offers kids a safe way to learn real world behaviors without the real world consequences… or maybe not. The toys kids play with during make-believe time can have a significant real-world impact on what kids learn or don’t learn, and how they develop their creativity, imagination and unique talents. Pretend play toys can have real-world consequences for kids.
If kids have the right play toys, pretend play can help them learn and develop the following benefits:
1. Kids can use their imagination to begin to practice and experiment with the results of their actions.
2. Kids learn to express real-world emotions, both positive and negative.
3. Imaginative play even helps kids define their own identities as they take on the roles of their parents.
4. Taking on imaginary roles helps kids feel greater significance, which builds their self-esteem.
5. Imaginative play allows kids to experience a greater sense of control over their own lives.
6. Imaginative play allows kids to exercise creative thinking.
All toys are not created equally. Different types of toys produce different types of development and behaviors. The right toys can stimulate kid’s creative talents and remove the boundaries from their imagination. The wrong toys can limit creative talents and have a negative influence on behavior.
There is a down-side to pretend play. Most pretend play toys stimulate role playing. As listed above, role-playing is responsible for many of the benefits of make-believe play. However, role-playing opens the door to a host of potential problems. For better or for worse, kids learn a lot about relationships from observing their role models, which is why it is so important to avoid exposing them to negative role models. In addition to negative influences such as bad attitudes, role playing toys have other potential problems. Media driven role models such as Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles can actually limit creativity because the behavioral boundaries are already defined and restricted by the characters.
Here are some tips on what parents can do to avoid the negative impact of role-playing toys:
1. Help kids assimilate the information coming from role models and sort out which of those behaviors they want to accept or reject. Kids can then make the transition from merely imitating role models to incorporating behavior into their own relationships.
2. Help kids remove the negative attributes of role models, such as their weaknesses and limitations, so kids see how to avoid accepting those limitations in their own lives.
3. Stimulate creativity in their kids by providinpretend play toys that are not based on any media driven characters. This allows kids to start with a blank slate and develop their own characters.
With the right play toys and some parental guidance, make-believe can be a safe and productive place for kids to develop their God-given talents.
