Ferrets — The Ideal Pet

If you love pets that are quiet and cute, then ferrets will be the right choice. Because by their very appearance, many people tend to mistake them for rodents but they are actually more like a cross between a cat and a dog.

During earlier times ferrets were used to hunt down, or dig out rabbits from their burrows. But nowadays they are mostly kept as pets. If you are thinking of buying a ferret, you should buy one from reputable shelters or breeders or from the Humane Society.

Before taking your ferret home, make sure that your ferret has been given the necessary vaccinations. It is also a good idea to consult a local veterinarian for information on common ferret diseases and their cure. Ferrets live roughly for about 7 to 10 years. A ferret costs around $75 to $120, depending on its age and from where you buy.

Contrary to common belief, ferrets can be trained effectively though it may not be as easy as training cats or dogs. Training ferrets to learn the rules of the house will be a gradual process. The best way to reward a ferret for positive behavior is by giving it food. For behaviors that are not acceptable, paying no attention to the ferret or confining it in the cage will work wonders. As ferrets move around a lot, they tend to mess up the rooms. Nipping is also a major problem associated with ferrets. Nevertheless they can be trained to use the litter and not to nip.

Good ferret care is important for raising a healthy and happy ferret. Frequent interaction with their owners help ferrets get used to their new homes. It is also a good idea to spend a lot of time with your new pet ferret especially during the early days of domesticating. Ferrets that are used to playing with people since their baby days tend to be more friendly and playful. Though ferrets sleep almost 15 to 16 hours a day, they are very active the rest of the time and love to play with toys and frolic around.

Ferrets are carnivores by nature and require a diet rich in animal protein and low in fiber. Ferrets were generally given cat or dog dry foods before, but nowadays specially packed ferret foods are available in pet shops. Totally Ferret, Ferrotone and Zupreem are the most common ferret food brands among ferret owners.

A variety of ferret accessories are now also available on the market, which include toys, cages and other innovative items. Large cages should be bought complete with floors, stairs and tunnels. If you have enough space in your backyard, you can also make a natural abode for your pet, including hammocks, hanging bunks, cozy beds and custom litters.

Green Education is the key to solving our economic woes

Since we are one of the few green educators for those interested in green industry potential yet recognized as leaders in the US I think you will agree and appreciate our approach. We should know by now real estate is the great equalizer. Cure that disconnect and most of our problems go away. Green building and the energy sectors create value, plain and simple. This is the new industrial revolution, and let’s begin not tolerate republican and democrat whining. After green certifying 4300 in just 24 months we still have so developers, those in politics and in high places who still are so uneducated. It amazed me that most still feel it is more expensive to build and or renovate green and do not understand first costs vs life of a structure and marketing potential. So while people lose jobs and green products and systems manufacturers are hungry, in fact starving for their products to get to market, this is the precisely the disconnect. Is it me or isn’t it common sense how important Realtors and Mortgage, finance, inspection, and those professionals in charge of valuations for the built structure to get education? They are in properties 24/7 to make money from this sector so do they have a stake or what? This is our target market. There is such a disconnect. If anyone has goals for overcoming obstacles for development for renewable energy I can tell you, it is education. When you wonder how to have effective communication for all of the above it is communication. When you wonder how private investors and pension funds and bankers will change their views about what the new green revolution can mean to a real estate investment it is education. Real Estate is the great equalizer and the great destroyer. Every market, every product and every system and service somewhere in the “chain” has real estate in their portfolio or in their short and long term investment plans. Since land and the structure on the land is real estate, can’t you just see the potential for taking all of the old farms that aren’t selling, and old factories that are sitting and all that land that is sitting and turn it into bio refineries? So, I train, STOP COMPLAINING. Get into the game.

Millionaires and Billionaires will be made in the next 5 years and those skeptics who want to keep thinking this is about tree hugging, and saving the polar bear should turn on their MBA, they learned nothing and move over for those who see caring about the future through their children’s eyes will prevail. But understand this hits every concern. There are those who want to combat high utility bills they are going green. Those who believe in global warming are go green. Whether you hate funding terrorism or just don’t want to rely on third world countries controlling our energy consumption for and gas oil, jump in and get involved. So if you are wondering what this means to your business, to your as an individual put education at the top of your goals and all will fall into place. Real Estate will rebound, people will buy if they have a better home and lower utility bills. Investors will invest in bio refineries, and jobs will be created for new technologies. Remember computers? On all of the land that is just sitting that is for sale. and the incentives the administration may be offering can kick start us all.

Every person involved in these issues owns a home or will buy or lease. the possibilities and opportunities are mind boggling. They want to effect change so what is wrong with that right about now?

Keep it Real: the All-natural Pet Diet

Everybody knows that an all-natural diet is a healthy diet. It’s no coincidence that what’s good for you is also good for your dog and cat. It’s also no secret that – aside from the buzzwords – most people don’t know enough about what “all-natural†means.

 

We are surrounded by eco-friendly, holistic catch-phrases: all-natural, free-range, green, organic. However, most of us don’t look beyond the words on the label to understand exactly what they are paying for when opting for these newer, healthier alternatives. Natural foods – simply stated – are those that contain no artificial additives or preservatives. When you and I are shopping at the grocery, this is what we are finding in our natural foods aisle. Are the rules the same when it comes to our pets?

 

In a sense, yes. Our dogs and cats are just as vulnerable to the negative affects of artificial food supplements as you and I are. These can lead to a number of negative health issues that will affect your pet’s quality of life. However, when it comes to a pet’s diet, “natural†usually also means “species specific.â€

 

Although many pet food manufacturers probably have good intentions and stand behind their products, the ingredients in mainstream dog foods seem to indicate that quality can suffer in the name of profits. A quick look at what goes into most commercial dog and cat foods, reveals a make-it-cheap mentality that can cause negative effects on your pet’s health. Many manufacturers use “4D†meat in their pet foods. “4D†is a category that includes meat that comes from diseased, down, dying and dead animals. These ingredients are then combined with grain fillers to create the cheapest products possible.

 

“4D†meat may seem utterly unpalatable to you and I, but your dog has a digestive system that can handle less than optimum meats. However, like most pet owners, you probably want more nutritious ingredients going into your dog’s meal. As far as grain fillers go, your dog and cat have no need for these things in their diet and are not benefiting from them in any way. Add a nasty mix of sugar, salt, cancer-causing chemicals and preservatives; cook any remaining nutrients out, and you’ve got yourself a standard can of dog or cat food. Is there a better way?

 

There are a number of alternatives for your pet that are healthy and species specific. A species specific pet diet is one that is geared to match your pet’s nutritional needs, without negative or superfluous ingredients. For instance, your cat is a carnivore. Your cat needs meat and meat only. There is no need for you to pad your cat’s diet with grain and vegetable fillers. For dogs, an omnivorous diet is more appropriate, but most commercial foods are high on filler and low on important meat proteins and fats. Some pet owners are choosing to feed their pets an all natural, species specific diet, by cooking for their pets: creating homemade meals just like the ones they are cooking for themselves and their family members. For some owners, this might be a great alternative, but many find that this path is time consuming and difficult. HOW GREEN IS ARTIFICIAL GREEN?

If you’re planning on installing  turf to your home, commercial property, or sports fields, you’ve got a number of things to think about and a ton of questions you want answered. These days, however, it’s not surprising that many people spend a lot of time worrying about the environmental impact of what they do with their properties. After all, we’re app rather conscious of this footprint idea. We all leave a mark on the world and most of us want to make sure that we don’t do anything to make our impact a negative one for generations to come.

But what about artificial grass? Is it really a good idea? Is it really an environmentally friendly choice? How can something that’s artificial actually be good for the environment and better, in most instances, than the natural choice?

These are good questions, certainly, and it’s our job here at National Greens to make sure our customers are properly educated about their options when it comes to artificial turfs for residential and commercial properties.

Without further ado, then, let’s consider the first question. Is artificial grass a good thing for the environment and the environmentally friendly option? The short answer to that is yes, it most definitely is a good thing and it is the best option for the environment. The long answer, the ‘why this is’ answer, we can tell you that it requires less water and less repair and maintenance than regular grass.

Artificial turfs are also more durable in the sense that they last much longer than natural grass. They don’t need to be mowed, they don’t get muddy, and they are available for play all year around, at any time. They don’t flood or freeze, either, which means there is no need to develop methods to manage excess water or frozen ground, which can use up natural resources or mean we end up putting more toxins into the environment.

Artificial turf doesn’t absorb toxins either, as natural grass does through the soil, and artificial turf can be a great way to recycle elements like rubber. There’s no need to apply pesticides, and it’s an all-round cost saver.

A growing number of high schools  and colleges across America are opting for artificial turf for their athletic fields. Golf courses, commercial properties, and even a few residential properties are opting for artificial turf as well.

Offering a more consistent surface than regular, natural grass, artificial turf is not only environmentally friendlier than the real thing, it is also a lot safer for everyone, particularly athletes and children. Artificial turf is actually a great addition to any school yard, park, or playground. It’s even the preferred surface for KinderCare businesses around the country, since it offers protection against hard falls and nasty knocks, especially with young children (toddlers) and those who are particularly energetic!

Sports enthusiasts can benefit from access to artificial grass because it also provides the means of practicing on a regular basis without having to worry about the weather. And what better way to enjoy the outdoors than on artificial turf that’s comfortable, safe, and requires virtually no maintenance. The outdoors is literally opening up with artificial turf options and communities and families are able to take advantage of fresh air once again, without having to worry about mowing the lawn.

For sports establishments, it’s crucial to consider that even well-conditioned natural grass can only take 50 events a year according to most research efforts. Artificial turf is a superior playing field to traditional grass as well, since, according to most users, the level surface lets everything from balls to athletes to move better and faster.

The only potential downside to artificial turf is that it may need to be replaced every twelve to fifteen years in the case of most heavily used sports turfs – but this is only in the case of heavy usage. The vast majority of turfs installed in residential and commercial properties don’t need to be replaced at all and serve instead as a great way to recycle otherwise unusable and non-degradable materials.

Basset Hound Dog Breed

Although we are unable to identify the exact time period in history when the Bassett Hound was created, some historians have noted that the first mention of this type of dog was found during 16th-century text that made mention to “short-legged dogs used for badger hunting.

We also know that comparable dwarf breeds that had short legs were used during the ancient times, but it is very difficult to focus in on exactly when and why the Bassett Hound was intentionally bred.

The word “Basset” is French and is derivative from bas, which means “dwarf”. We know that short-legged dogs were normally used for slow paced hunting during the French Revolution. History of this dog breed indicates a much clearer snap shot after French Revolution.

During this time period that Basset Hounds became a whole lot more common as a hunting companion. Many Hunters needed a dog that was intelligent enough with its scent ability to hunt prey and at the same time was slow enough so that they could be followed and hunted with guns. This is where this animal received its small dwarf-like body; it became the perfect hunting formula for these needs.

Ultimately, there are four different variations of the short-legged kind were created. One of these variations is know as the Basset Artesien Normand. The Basset Artesien Normand is what closely resembles today’s Basset Hound. In the late 1800s and then again around 1930, crosses were developed with Bloodhounds to bring up their size. The first Bassett Hounds were sent to England and the United States during the late 1800s.

Personality

You will discover that the Bassett Hound is one of the most calm and relaxed dog breeds alive today. They are very good-natured with nearly every other animal and human they come into contact with. The Basset is enormously suited for kids and is well behaved even in the company of other strange dogs. Even though these dogs are considered high in affection levels and friendliness, do not underestimate its watchdog capabilities. In addition, these Hounds made great watchdogs.

Taking Care Of A Basset Hound

Basset Hounds need a dose of daily exercise, but not an over dose. One or two walks each day on the leash around your blog will suit just fine. But, like any animal, it is always good for extra playtime and games when possible. Bassett Hounds should sleep indoors with the family during the evening. During the day, having these dogs should have access to an enclosed yard. There’s no need for that much grooming. Just a little brushing and bath times throughout the week will be fine. Also, make note that these dogs tend to drool frequently.

Health Information

Basset Hounds have a live around 9 and 12 years, sometimes they live longer, it all depends on their health. Big health concerns are ectropion, vWD, CHD, gastric torsion, OCD, thrombopathy, otitis externa, and elbow dysplasia. Minor health problems may include patellar luxation. Obesity is a common issue with these animals when owners overfeed them. Make sure that you place caution on how much food you provide.

Teaching Kids about Nutrition? Add Patience to the Food Pyramid

With the onset of a new school year, it was time to start thinking about establishing healthy school-time routines especially in the area of nutrition. After dining on cold cereal and pop corn all summer, it was time to reacquaint my kids with foods that don’t come with toys or have cartoon characters on the back of the box—or for that matter, foods that don’t even come in a box.

Upon preparing to enter the seventh grade, my daughter announced that she wanted to pack a lunch to school. After toting a lunchbox all through grade school, I thought she would be ready for school lunch. Then she told me what she wanted to have in her lunch. Together, the items she requested for her lunchtime menu had all the nutritional value of a screwdriver.

Encouraging my kids to consume a healthy diet has been particularly challenging to me because I can’t exactly lead by example. The “do as I say not as I do†command lost its effectiveness long before I had the opportunity to use it. I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle. My kids are aware that I regularly go running or cycling because they insist that I hose myself down and pass through a decontamination chamber before entering the house after a workout. While my diet is pretty nutritious, my mouth doesn’t exactly water at the prospect of a veggie burger with a side of tofu. And I do my best not to get within 10 miles of steamed broccoli.

Over the course of six years, I’ve gone the rounds with my oldest daughter about eating at least some of the lunch I packed. I tried threats, bribes, and episodes of getting on my knees and begging. Each day her lunch was either completely untouched or looked like she used her lunch box as a footstool with its initial contents mangled beyond recognition. Nothing worked. She either starved herself during lunch or graciously accepted handouts from her classmates. I was ready to give up. However, in order to prevent myself from being added to the guest list of child protective services for starving my children, I still made sure my daughter had a nutritious sack lunch in her backpack each morning. I even ended all discussion about whether she ate her lunch or not.

Eventually she started to soften. I started seeing partially eaten sandwiches and fewer carrots in her lunch box after school. I wouldn’t say that I’m the suspicious type, but my daughter’s dentist would because I showed up at his office with a half-eaten sandwich to have him confirm that the bite marks were actually my daughter’s. He also thinks I’m a little strange.

Through all the arguing, tantrums, and threatening to hold my breath until I turned blue, it turned out that patience and letting my daughter make her own decisions worked the best. This doesn’t mean that following a nutritious diet is no longer an issue, but we have made great progress. I think as long as I silently maintain a healthy lifestyle (and don’t get caught snitching the multi-colored cereals), the kids might just catch on and make a healthy choice.

How to Find Kids Dance Fashions

Dancing is a popular past time and exercise activity for little girls (and big girls!).  Of course, adults and some little boys dance as well, but in this article, we will be discussing the latest trends in dance fashions for the young child, and teach you what to get your little girl for her first dance lesson or what to send your older child to dance wearing for the more experienced girls.

The staple items for your little dancer is a leotard.  You will want to ask her teacher what color leotard she likes her students to wear.  Generally, you will have your child wear a pink leotard.  You can choose whether to get her long sleeve, short sleeve, or a tank leotard.  Many teacher’s prefer the tank version because it allows students and spectators to see the lines, muscles, and movements of the arms, making them look more beautiful when dancing ballet.  You may want to choose a long sleeve leotard for your daughter if she is taking lessons in the winter.  If you are on a budget, try finding these at your local thrift store or kids consignment store.  Little Adventures has a line of girl’s leotards in pink, white, and lavender in velvet and spandex that are all machine washable and come in 4 different sizes from 2T-10.

There are special tights that dancers wear.  They shimmer and make the leg look beautiful.  The tights are somewhat prices, but they should last a long time if you have your little girl take them off right after dance and don’t let her walk barefoot in them so the sole of the tight stays clean and doesn’t turn black.

If your child’s dance teacher would like her to wear a skirt or tutu over her leotard, you have a variety of choices from frilly to simple and from sequins to flowers,  you can find tutus and dance skirts at your local dance supply store.  Little Adventures also has a line of tutus in pink, green, and lavender to match the above leotards.  Each tutu comes with a white sequin waist and a pretty flower in the middle of the tutu. If your little girl likes to twirl, you could indulge her with matching wrist scarves for pretend play or for her dance recital.  There are also fun and frilly tutus else where, so just ask your child’s teacher what color and style she would like.  Often teachers like all the girls to dress exactly the same, so that none feel “different” or out of style.  However, every teacher is different.  Many teachers also sell dance clothes from their studios.

To complete the look, the dance slippers.  If you got a pink, black, or white leotard, you can get matching dance shoes to match.  If your child is taking tap lessons, you can find those at Payless Shoes as well as.  You can new get dance slippers for around $15 and Tap shoes for around $20.  If you would like to save some money, try your local craigslist or ebay for gently used shoes.

Of course, top it off with a beautiful bun, or headband to keep her hair out of her face while she is dancing, singing and bouncing.  A great new fashion for hair is the Knot Head which will keep even shorter styles tightly in a bun and won’t hurt or pull out your child’s hair.  Dancing is so much fun!  Make sure she is the cutest in the class by following these few simple dance fashion tips!
