“Given to Monsieur and Madame four peters, two forms, value eight and a half moutons, where with to buy a pack of cards” – so reads an entry dated May 14, 1379 in the account books of Joanna, Duchess of Brabant. It takes a while to familiarize a novice’s awkward fingers with what must be one of the most popular and widely known (through film and fiction if not through real life) modern online and high-tech casino games. And in the giddy atmosphere of first live games one may never realize that the glossy polygons – an as yet unruly freak-show of royal Siamese twins – have not in fact always been as they seem to have always been since forever, since you first saw a dog-eared pack on your grandma’s table.
The very first playing cards seem to have originated in Central Asia. The first known reference to cards is a 10th or 11th century record of paper dominoes, printed to represent all of the 21 combinations of a pair of dice, used in other games in China. The earliest found artifacts come from 9th century China. Scholars associate the first straight-sheet paper cards with the first use of straight writing paper as opposed to paper rolls (being one of the many ancient Chinese inventions so obvious now to any sane modern) and with the earliest book printing.
Playing cards in quite modern form were likely introduced into Europe by Egyptian Mamelukes in the late 14th century. The typical Mameluke deck had 52 cards, four suits (polo sticks, coins, swords, and cups), and three court cards which depicted abstracted design rather than persons. At the time, cards were hand-made and only wealthy Europeans could afford them. But the technique of applying woodcuts (used till then to decorate fabric) to paper was introduced around 1400 and mass production followed suit. In the period between 1418 and 1450 there are records of professional card makers. Nowadays, card production is one of the most flourishing world-wide industries.
The number and style of suits in 15th century playing cards varied: some decks had five suits, and hearts, bells, leaves, and acorns were the standard suits in Germany, still used today in Southern Germany for a distinctive set of card games. From my own childhood, besides the now standard deck, I remember the German suits which I much preferred because of their relative pictorial richness, particularly the golden nut and greenish cupule of the acorn suit: perhaps a gift imported into Asia, Kazakhstan from German relatives.
If the kings were the highest card in the suit in early games, by the 14th century the “Ace” (stemming from the Latin for the lowest unit of currency, as) began to acquire the ability to turn highest card, leaving the Two as lowest. This was an especially popular mode during the French Revolution when it was vital that the lower classes rise above royalty. A revolutionary would likewise disdain to play cards with Kings and Queens, preferring the innovative design of Liberties, Equalities, and Fraternities, but the classic design returned with the coming of Napoleon to power.
A reversible double image in court cards was introduced in the 19th century. The earliest of such designs was American, though the invention is attributed to a French card maker of the late 18th century whose idea was prohibited by the French government. The purpose was to prevent players from reversing their court cards during a session, thus in part revealing their hands to even not the most observant of opponents.

Last labor day weekend in brooklyn was crazy last year, or so I heard. Mainly since I was pregnant, and couldn’t spend time running alongside of my hometown bandwagon from Guyana. Game Reserves in Kenya: Mount Kenya National Park
Mount Kenya National Park is located in the Kenyan Highlands on the slopes of the mountain after which it is named. 150 kilometres North East of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, and just South of the Equator, stands the once active volcano of Mt. Kenya. The Kenyan Highlands are covered in bamboo forests at the lower elevations, giving way to scrub land on the higher slopes, and finally becoming rocks, snow and ice on the mountain peaks.
With its highest peak reaching a height of 5199 metres, Mt. Kenya is Kenya’s highest mountain, and Africa’s second largest after Mt. Kilimanjaro. The Mount Kenya National Park circles the mountain, making one of the most scenic Game Reserves in Kenya.
This is a popular mountain for climbers because the slopes are easier to scale than the intimidating Kilimanjaro. There are also many great hikes and walks in the foothills and the lower slopes. One of the attractions of Mt. Kenya is its anomalous permanent glaciers, which are unexpected given its location almost straddling the equator, and given the high temperatures of Africa’s equatorial climate in general.
No matter whether you attempt the peak or are content to pick your way through the rocks and glaciers on the lower slopes, you will experience majestic views over one of Kenya’s most beautiful national parks.
Lodges and clubs throughout the park specialise in assisting and guiding climbers. The best months for climbing are January/February and August/September. If you come from the lowlands, it may take a few days to acclimatise to the higher elevation of the Mt. Kenya terrain.
Because of its location in the Highlands, the park is home to game and mammals that have adapted to life at higher elevations. You may also be lucky enough to view some of the rare and endangered species that can only be found in this part of the Kenya Game Reserves system, such as the bongo, the largest of the forest antelope, and the several, a medium-sized cat.
There is also a wide variety of alpine and sub alpine flora to be found on the lower slopes where rainfall is plentiful. Come to Mt. Kenya to view the buffalo, lion, and leopard (now rare). Here you will see some rare and unusual birds, such as the purple-throated cuckoo and the red-fronted parrot. You may also see a variety of raptors, along with the very rare lammergeyer, or bearded vulture.

How To Start Coin Collecting
While it may seem difficult at first, coin collecting is actually a very simple hobby that can get quite interesting at times. Many beginners don’t really know how to start coin collecting because there are so many different currencies and so many ways of categorizing them. On first glance, the only way to start coin collecting is to get every single coin on the planet. However, starting simpler can be done in a matter of minutes.
A very popular way to start coin collecting is by collecting circulated Jefferson nickels. These guys come in 40-coin rolls and can be purchased at $2 apiece from nearly every place that can break a dollar. Start by buying 80 circulated Jefferson nickels. This will cost you a simple $4 to get started. Wash them out, but not too roughly. Sort them by decade, and then by year. Pick out the best one of each year. You’re looking for the one that looks the newest. Whatever’s left is still worth five cents, so you can go ahead and throw it in your wallet if you’d like. It’s not uncommon that collectors go through so many rolls that they end up reinvesting doubles on more rolls. Make a grid for the nickels, and tape each one on. What’s great about Jefferson nickels is that every single year (with the exception of 1943-1945) can be found in circulation.
You can repeat this process for every single type of coin. Obviously, quarters will be more expensive to collect than nickels at face value, and older coins will be rarer than new ones. Whatever your choice, just pick something and go for it. Start with basic things like the date. Then, you can start categorizing by other things, like mint marks, which are marks identifying which mint the coin came from. Different mint marks can end up determining the name of the coin, like Barber Dimes, Bust Quarters, and Shield Nickels. As you can tell, there are many different types of coins that you can start collecting today.
Coin collecting is a very fun hobby that will probably never end because currency is always available. There are people who have collected so many coins that the only ones left cost thousands of dollars. In fact, known as the most valuable coin in the world, a 1933 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle was sold for $7.5 million US dollars in 2002. The largest coin collection in the world was found in a shipwreck in the Atlantic Ocean; it held over 500,000 gold and silver coins. Discovered in 2007, each coin is worth up to $4,000, and at least a few hundred apiece. No modern era coin collection can match up to that one. That’s guaranteed.
